SNAKE AND BABY RABBIT

Before I share this story, I really think we should not intervene with natures plan. One animal often dies to feed another, and all of that stuff. But tonight I completely disregarding that conviction.

I was heading down to the pond to take some video in the water. On my way down the trail i saw a smallish black snake all coiled up at the bottom of the trail. it was not very alarming, and I thought maybe it was just shedding so I got my camera out to take some video of it. I quickly realized it was not shedding, but had wrapped itself around an animal. I saw 2 little feet and then the head of a little bunny. I stopped taping and looked closely and could see that it was still breathing. So ran and grabbed a stick to encourage the snake to let it go, When the snake was harassed enough he started to unwind, and as he did I heard a loud screech from the rabbit that was like a dog squeak toy and feared that he was badly injured. But he kind of limped in the opposite direction of the snake towards the pond. So I got some footage and in a few minutes could tell he was moving okay. At one point I went to pet the rabbit on the back, don’t know why, think I was just trying to calm it down, not a great idea really. Because it bolted off and ran into the water. I edited the part out when I touched him (not my finest moment) but left in the part where he went for a swim. Really did not know a rabbit could swim? I fished him out and put him in a box. He’s very small and don’t really think he would make it on his own? Will do some research on this, but for now he is safe from predators. Also some strict do’s and don’t s were discussed with Peanut the rescue Pitt, regarding our guest. At the end of the video the snake had gone back to the area where I picked the rabbit up from, so think he was hoping to reclaim his dinner?

This video is poorly shot and quickly edited, and may creep you out if you really don’t like snakes. I also put it to music, because the sound of my voice trying to calm down the bunny and the part where I am encouraging him to get out of the water is simply too embarrassing. -Tom
