Rabbit, any of 29 species of long-eared mammals belonging to the family Leporidae, excluding hares.
Frequently the terms rabbit and hare are used interchangeably, a practice that can cause confusion. Jackrabbits, for instance, are actually hares, whereas the rockhares and the hispid hare are rabbits. Rabbits differ from hares in size, life history, and preferred habitat. In general, rabbits are smaller and have shorter ears than hares. They are born without fur and with closed eyes after a gestation period of 30–31 days. They prefer habitats composed of trees and shrubs, where they live in burrows dug into the soil. Hares, in contrast, are larger in size, and they are born fully developed with fur and open eyes after a gestation period lasting about 42 days. They prefer open areas such as prairies, where they make their nests in small open depressions.
Rabbits are ground dwellers that live in environments ranging from desert to tropical forest and wetland. Their natural geographic range in the Western Hemisphere encompasses the middle latitudes. In the Eastern Hemisphere rabbits are found in Europe, portions of Central and Southern Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Sumatra, and Japan. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has been introduced to many locations around the world, and all breeds of domestic rabbit originate from the European. Nearly half of the world’s rabbit species are in danger of extinction; many are among the most vulnerable of all mammals.

खरगोश एक छोटा-सा सुंदर एवं आकर्षक जानवर है। यह देखने में काफी प्यारा और चंचल होता है। खरगोश उन जानवरों में शुमार है, जो दुनिया के हर एक कोने में पाया जाता है।सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात तो यह है, कि खरगोश एक शाकाहारी जानवर है। हम सभी बचपन में खरगोश और कछुआ के बीच के रेस की कहानी सुन चुके हैं।
जिसमें बताया गया है, कि खरगोश कितना चालाक, चतुर और बुद्धिमान होता है। यह मुख्य रूप से फल और घास खाता है। इतना ही नहीं बल्कि खरगोश मुख्यतः घास के मैदानों, जंगलों, खेतों इत्यादि जगहों पर रहना पसंद करता है।
खरगोश का मुलायम बाल इनको सबसे आकर्षक बनाता है। खरगोश की सबसे बड़ी खासियत तो यह है, कि यह काफी तेज दौड़ता है। सबसे आश्चर्य की बात तो यह है, कि 2 किलो का खरगोश 9 किलो के कुत्ता के बराबर पानी पी सकता है।
नर खरगोश (Male Rabbit) को Buck और मादा खरगोश (Female Rabbit) को Does कहा जाता है। साथ ही खरगोश के बच्चे को Kit या Kitten कहा जाता है।
खरगोश एक शाकाहारी पालतू जानवर है, जो विभिन्न रंगों में संसार के लगभग हर भागों में पाया जाता है। यह प्यारा-सा जीव 40 से 50 सेंटीमीटर लंबा होता है।
हम बचपन से ही खरगोश से परिचित हैं, क्योंकि बचपन में हम खरगोश से संबंधित कई कहानियां सुन चुके हैं। खरगोश एक ऐसा जीव है, जिसके सिर्फ पैरों की तली में ही पसीना आता है।
खरगोश का जीवनकाल सामान्य रूप से 8 से 10 वर्षों का होता है। यह 1 दिन में 18 बार झपकी लेता है और लगभग अपना 8 घंटा सोने में बिताता है।
सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात तो यह है, कि खरगोश आंख खोल कर भी सो सकता है। इतना ही नहीं बल्कि यह अपने आप को बचाने के लिए सीधा न दौड़ कर टेढ़ा-मेढ़ा दौड़ता है।
खरगोश औसतन 30-40 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा की तेज गति से दौड़ सकता है। यह काफी फुर्तीला होता है। यूरोप महादेश में लोग खरगोश के पैर को अपने गले में पहनते हैं।
इसके पीछे उनकी मान्यता है, कि उनका किस्मत इससे अच्छा बना रहेगा। खरगोश अपनी खुशी का इजहार हवा में उछल कर पटखनी खाकर करता है।
