Howell Nature Center: Baby Bunnies Sleeping…

Its another beautiful April day! As you are out playing or working in the backyard, you may stumble upon baby rabbits. While they’re very cute, and with Easter right around the corner, it may be tempting to touch them. However, doing so could cause them serious harm. Think you’ve found a baby bunny in trouble? Check out this flow chart to help determine if it needs help: bit.ly/3b2s7YU (Please remember it is illegal for anyone to keep or care wild mammals without a permit)

Each of these little eastern cottontail orphans came to us with their own story. This video shows an artificial nest group we’ve created containing at least 6 different litters. Everyone is napping after a hearty breakfast!

Due to COVID-19, we are not able to rely on volunteer help like usual. Each day, we have one wildlife clinic staff member to feed 25 squirrels every four hours and 30 bunnies twice a day. This is about 6 hours of work each day for just feeding, on top of other duties like cleaning and diet prep.

As a nonprofit that relies on program fees to operate, the cancellation of all our spring groups has been financially devastating. You can make a HUGE difference for these baby bunnies, and my others like them, by making a tax-deductible donation. Thank you for helping us keep our clinic doors open!
