Diary of an Oak Tree 5 April 2020 – Watch badger cub venture out for the first time plus cute baby..

Happy Easter everyone!! It’s been a really exciting week on the wildlife trail cameras, we spotted a badger cub making it’s first little foray out of the sett, a brief appearance but we’re excited to see this little one again soon. The cute baby bunnies have been busy exploring, although they need to watch out as the Fox is very active and we even had a Buzzard appear – the first time we’ve filmed one on the camera. The stock dove has been back and the little owls and jackdaws have been around everyday. Hope you enjoy, please leave us a comment to let us know you’re favourite bit from this weeks episode.

In This Week’s episode – Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), Muntjac Deer (Muntiacus), Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Carrion crow (Corvus corone), Great Tit (Parus major), Badger (Meles meles), Little Owl (Athene noctua), European Jackdaw (Corvus monedula), Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), Eurasian magpie (Pica pica), Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos), Common Blackbird (Turdus merula), Robin (Erithacus rubecula), Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) – heard calling, Common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus), Stock Dove (Columba oenas).

In the field where our horses live stands a truly magnificent ancient English oak tree. Join us for a weekly series, Diary Of An Oak Tree, in which we use unedited trail camera footage to share a little insight into the amazing world we have been lucky enough to share with this amazing Tree and all the animals and birds that visit.

This incredible tree has previously been hit by lightening and has a deep split in its trunk all the way to the ground. Our horses and ourselves often found ourselves gravitating to rest beside it and enjoy its comforting presence. Sheltering from the rain or sitting shaded from the heat of the summer’s sun, we would often wonder at the amazing changes it has witnessed, standing there for close to 200 years, it is hard to fathom the world it would have witnessed when just a tiny sapling.

We became fascinated by the wealth of wildlife that this amazing tree supports, so a few years ago we set up a trail camera to begin to document some of the birds and animals that called this magnificent Oak tree their home or came to feed within its branches.

What we discovered was even more than we could have bargained for. Our main stars, beyond the tree, are a pair of Little Owls, (Athene noctua) who every year raise their brood of babies in a well hidden crevice and provide us with hours of pure joy as we observe their antics as they explore their new world.

Over time we have set up a couple more trail cameras which we positioned near by to capture some of the other wildlife comings and goings in the field around the Oak Tree.

From blue tits to moorhens, squirrels to foxes we’ve seen all manner of creatures in the branches of this Ancient Oak Tree. Whilst near by we also regularly spot Brown Hare’s, Badgers, Fallow Deer and Muntjac Deer.
