Rabbit

fostering a rabbit who just had babies – need some advice.

Hello – I am working with a local rescue to foster some Lionhead bunnies who were found, dumped, after Easter. The one I have was scheduled for a spay today and LO AND BEHOLD she literally had babies this morning. The humane society vet thinks she’s very young so this is probably her first litter. She kind of had them in just the middle of her enclosure today, so I tried to moved them to a better nesting box (pictured below). Mama seemed happy and immediately went to check it out and move to stuff around….but she keeps stepping on them?!? She jumped into this box and just sat on-top of them. She’s not particularly aggressive with them, but she isn’t being gentle either. I’ve heard them peep and squeak a bit so I’m hoping they’re trying to tell her to watch out but idk if she’s getting the messages.

The humane society has a wildlife rehabber who can take the babies and try to bottle feed them, if necessary. I’m trying to figure out if her jumping on them is dangerous or maybe a bit normal for a first time mom?

Any and all advice is welcome!
