Rabbit

What is the kindest thing to do?

Warning, talk of bunny illness and death.

Apologies if this violates a rule. I'm not asking for diagnosis or treatment but advice from people who maybe have seen this before.

Our 5 and a half year old boy has a lump on his jaw. The vet thinks it's an abscess and referred us to the local zoo for treatment. The problem is we can't afford it.

The lump seems to have gotten bigger but he's not bothered by it.

There doesn't seem to be any indication he's in pain.

We don't want to put him to sleep if he's still happy but what if it bursts? Will that be horrible for him?

If we can't afford surgery is it kinder to humanly put him down now or to wait until there's any signs of distress?

I don't want him to die but I don't want him to suffer.

Is waiting until something happens and he's in pain a bad thing to do? Is having him put to sleep prematurely cruel?

How do I know it's the right time?

Sorry for the depressing post. I'm feeling lost and want to do the best I can for him.
