Some people have asked for updates on this baby i found in my yard.
I’ve never owned a bunny before, but i decided to keep them. I’ve been doing a lot of research, photos 2-4 are of his set up. Photo 5 is his dinner from the other day. Photo 6 is him cuddled up with my boyfriend. I’ve been feeding timothy hay, oxbow pellets, and morning/night he gets some fresh veggies. (any suggestions for fresh veggies/fruit is appreciated!!)
I made some posts on my local facebook groups and the owner didn’t reach out, their neighbor did. I ended up getting in contact with the actual owner, i guess they just recently adopted him.. and she said her son is severely allergic to rabbits and i could keep him. AKA she didn’t do any research and when she realized bunnies are a 10+ year commitment she left him to fend for himself outside in rainy cold massachusetts. People are so gross.
Anyway, he’s settling in great. He’s very sweet and his personality is slowly coming out more. I made an appointment with the vet for thursday to see if he’s fixed and to make sure he’s all good. I’m really hoping he’s neutered but if not i’ll take him to have that done. He was absolutely covered in deer ticks and i’m worried he’s going to get sick from it 🥺.
Please be critical on the set up, i want to make sure im doing the best i can for this sweet little boy. He deserves a warm comfortable life.

A lot of people are fine until they have the hay in the house for a while & the allergy kicks in.
Oh somebunnys happy!
The vet can give him medicine for the ticks. It works really well. I rescued a bunny that got left outside and she had tiny tiny ticks all over her face.
Wishing you a long happy life with your new bunny
Thanks for helping this little guy
Thank you for helping him! He got very lucky that you found him. Your setup looks lovely, he’s got lots of space and soft flooring. I know you have your pen set up like that to give him more space, but he’s eventually going to push the pen away from the wall and escape. You’ll need to either close the pen all the way or get some kind of panel you can attach the pen to. I would also be wary of the plastic bag for hay. He might chew on it and end up eating some of the plastic. It’s fine to just put the hay on top of his litter. He won’t eat the hay that gets soiled.
Ahhhh I saw your post in the local facebook group!!! I’m so happy this sweet boy has a happy ending with you 🥹 that old “owner” deserves so much bad karma
you made the best choice of your life. i hope every day with your bunny boy be even better than the last❤️
Oh I’m so happy for this sweet bun!!! And for you too! It sounds like you were meant for each other 🩷🩷🩷🩷 Although that’s EXTREMELY frustrating about the original owner, I always wonder what parents think they’re modeling for their kids when they do this 😒 But I’m glad he found a much better and more loving home with you 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
Omg so happy for the lil guy to be in a happy home! I recommend a stainless steel litterbox, its much easier to clean than any other materials. I also recommend going to tractor supply (from CT but used to live in MA and NH) and getting the pine pellets as litter! Its AMAZING at absorbing smells, dust free, and safe if ingested. Its usually only $8 for a huge 40lb bag. There is also a special brush from a company in Cambridge I cannot recommend enough, I got mine off chewy (its purple, dont remember the name…). Other advice is having stuff to play with or just bonding by hand feeding and laying on the floor with them. I dehydrate a lot of low sugar fruits and veggies as treats, and make most of my rabbits toys myself by stuffing paper towel tubes with hay and treats.
Your new furbaby looks so happy to be flopped next to you ♥️ I would be happy to offer more advice/tips and tricks if you need or want it!!
Congrats on your new bun, he’s a very lucky little guy!
In terms of fruit and veggie suggestions, I usually give my buns a mix of lettuce (typically romaine or red leaf) and herbs (parsley, cilantro, mint, dill), but they sometimes also get carrot greens and celery leaves if those are things I have on hand. Every rabbit has their own preferences; I have one rabbit who doesn’t like arugula or curly parsley, and another who loves both but won’t touch dill.
I have yet to come across a rabbit who doesn’t go crazy for banana (and make the silliest banana-eating noises), and a lot of them enjoy apple, carrots, blueberries and raspberries as treats.
What a beautiful and lucky bun! Thank you for rescuing this babe. I’m in NH, so yeah . . . big thumbs down to the person who set this bun loose. Your set up looks really cozy and comfortable. My buns would go to town on those baseboards, just something to consider if your guy is a nibbler. Also, is he getting time outside of his enclosure? Re: food, per our vet (and since one of our buns is a bit round), we go pretty light on pellets and focus more on hay/greens. We’ll also thrown in small pieces of banana, sliced grapes, shredded carrots, cucumber, blueberries, but these are definitely “treats”, so it’s kind of fun to put these inside toilet paper rolls or wooden puzzles for enrichment. Best of luck and wishing you years of bun-filled joy.
P.S. Keep an eye if he seems to be nibbling at those small carpets under his box/the cardboard box and perhaps replace with something like fleece blankets or willow mats? Since you wouldn’t want him ingesting the carpet fibers.
Bunbun found the winning lottery ticket with OP🥰
you are so kind to have done all of that just for a found bunny… i wish people was this educated in my country with rabbits… 🥲
Thank you so much for saving this adorable bunny and giving him a good home. You are right, some people are pretty terrible.
What did you decide to name your adorable little sweetheart?
Wow looks like a mix between my two bunnies! Wish I could post photos in the comments on this sub haha. So cute
Thank you for saving this baby! I think your set up looks great! The only slight criticism i have is that in my opinion rabbits dont need leafy greens morning and night, technically not even everyday, I would recommend giving a small amount just once per day.
i did want to add he will probably start to chew on the baseboards if you don’t cover them with stick on trim or plastic corner guards or something like that 🙂
Looks just like my bunny she is a lop harlequin mix. Watch her, my girl is so bad! 😭😂
This rabbit won the lottery.
You are a wonderful human. May your side of the pillow always be chilly <3
You are a beautiful person. Hopefully the vet will be able to address any potential issues from his time outside. Imo if you can afford it, try to do all the testing and treatment they recommend. A lot of stuff is easier when you deal with it early. Also, make sure you have a rabbit-savvy vet (seems likely given how much research you’ve been doing, but you don’t know what you don’t know).
Setup looks lovely! Watch for chewing on the rugs, they aren’t safe to ingest (some rabbits will leave it alone, others won’t). Not sure what amount of pellets you are feeding, so do check that it’s appropriate. It’s smaller than a lot of people think. I see the big reservoir water bowl which is not inherently bad, but do check regularly to make sure it stays clean and fully clean and disinfect it regularly. I used to have one like that and it was kind of a pain, now I just use ramekins and send them through the dishwasher every night. Personal preference! Not everyone is as lazy as me! I would also advise feeding pellets scattered around if he tends to wolf them down quickly to minimize choking risk. It’s one of those things where 99.99% of the time, it’s fine, but you want to do everything to prevent that one time something happens (also look up the rabbit heimlich).
I mostly stick to romaine and a few fresh herbs for my rabbit, but she’s got a sensitive stomach. You’ll find some differing opinions, but generally speaking it’s best to introduce new greens slowly and be mindful of anything with high amounts of any nutrient. I’d honestly avoid fruit. It’s easy to overdo it and so dangerous when it happens. My bun gets a bite of fruit a few times a year for special occasions only. (she gets a supplement every night as a treat)
So, how is it going? Do you have any problems? Questions?
Thank you for rescuing him and being so dedicated to his well being.
Aww I’m so happy he found you! He looks like he will have a nice life with you and it looks like he is already pretty comfortable with you. I think as long as you take him to the vet as soon as you’re able to, he should be okay. He’s already much better off than how you found him. Honestly hate that people just dump bunnies like they’re a soft toy. They’re so beautiful, even if they’re a bit sassy it’s all a part of their charm and they deserve to have a nice life with an owner that cares about them. Bet your new bun knows he’s found a good owner ☺️
You’re doing a great job for a first time bun parent. I can tell you did your research to provide this baby with a good home. He looks so comfortable in his new home already.
Thank you so much for taking him in!
Fruits and veggies wise, I’m sure the other redditers already gave great suggestions, but as a note remember to always introduce new foods in small amounts and when you’ll be home in the next few hours! Bun buns can be allergic to some foods! I found out about this the hard way with my baby girl getting all itchy after eating arugula. It’s also good to see how they handle the food, like some might upset their tummy a bit and whatnot.
Setup wise, I think what you’re doing is great! If you want to give the bun more space, you can consider letting him be a free roam bun, but to do that you have to ‘bunnyproof’ the room before that.
You’re doing great, that bun is truly loved 🫶🫶🫶
Once spayed give some outside time, he will probably use the litter box for his business. Watch the skirting boards he will chew on them.
Most rabbits can freeroam once trained but be in their enclosure at night.
Congratulations!
You’ve never owned a bunny before?! The care, effort you’re putting in are amazing. You have a big heart.
Thank you for being there for this bun!!! Screw the owners! You got this!! We are here with anything you need!
Excellent set up! Happy to see someone do the research needed to be a good bunny parent. It will pay off! Congratulations on your new best bud!
thank you for saving him. I’m happy that you read up on caring for a rabbit. nice that you will let him free roam. the pen that you set up is good but doesn’t look stable. maybe a weighted box on the outside will help. you can put hay in his litter box.
my rabbit really likes cilantro and parsley. Timothy hay pressed into shapes and sticks that are safe for rabbits. good job! he is a real beauty!
I only have one thing to say.
Where did you get those lights? They’re adorable!
Also, I lied. I have more to say.
You’re doing great. Good on you for adopting him. He’s beautiful. Enjoy your time together!
