I’m looking for advice on litter box habits. I got this 5 yr old fixed bonded pair from a shelter in October, litter box trained, but would still find pee spots outside a few times a week. In the beginning I tried different boxes and placements, and now they have one large and one XL box, much larger than the average rabbit owner. They both use both boxes. Their hay racks hang over them. Over the last couple of months I’ve noticed Earl Grey is peeing much more often, multiple times a day – most often on the silicone pads right outside the boxes, but also on seemingly random places on the carpet, plus on the forage mat after he’s done eating, and sometimes even in their cardboard house. To my knowledge, Mr. Maple never has accidents.
My response: When he does it in my presence, I firmly but calmly say “no” and attempt to place him in the litter box (not usually successful at grabbing him though). If I see him peeing in the box, I give him a treat. When I find pee spots I pull up the carpet square, wash with soap, then rinse vinegar. I wash any mats and textiles immediately. I also use enzyme spray on old spots, following instructions carefully. If pee is the on mat, I put soiled paper towels in the litter box nearby.
I’m starting to get really frustrated with this extra clean up and hoping there’s something obvious I’ve met. They’ve both been to the vet 4 times for other minor issues since I got them, no known health issues, so I’m hesitant to bring them in again just for this.
