Edit: Way more questions about the plushie. That’s Vorpal, Honey Bunny’s bestest friend, who reminds me of the Rabbit of Caerbannog. It was crafted by Matt of GnashlyTentacles in the San Francisco Bay Area: https://www.etsy.com/shop/GashlyTentacles
I get occasional questions about Honey Bunny’s diet, as he’s quite the healthy senior bun. Hint: It’s the same as when he was 1 year old (and weaned off alfalfa hay), with the addition of some apple+arthritis meds.
Honey Bunny always has unlimited hay available (generally a couple different varieties), and he chomps on it throughout the day. It’s great for him and keeps his teeth in fantastic shape.
We feed him fresh, leafy greens in the morning and evening, with a goal of 5+ different varieties at each meal. We can often forage for dandelion greens and clover. We grow some of the things he loved in California that are less common here in France, like kale and fennel (for the tops—we can get bulbs year around). The rest, we shop for. Spring is, of course, bountiful, and it’s fun to spoil him, so today’s breakfast included:
curly kale
dandelion greens (not too much of these top two—we watch total calcium content)
baby greens
maché
carrot tops
Italian/flat parsley (one of his favorites, limited for oxalic acid content)
dill
pink and yellow endive
Castelfranco radicchio
basil
apple (his only fruit) with meloxicam (for arthritis pain)
pellets (also a treat)
He occasionally gets some non-leafy veggies. Before bed, he gets a few more greens and a small amount of carrot.
He’s fruit/sugar-sensitive in a way that quickly leads to GI stasis. It took us a few emergency vet visits before we really got things dialed in. The apple is the safest way for us to administer his pain meds, and, thankfully, his system is used to it. He hasn’t had any banana in seven or eight years. If he smelled any today, he might murder me to get to it.
