Abscess Happy Update

I was desperately searching Reddit for hope that my boy was gonna recover from his jawbone abscess but, I couldn’t find any optimistic information, so I’m here to post a happy update to give the next unlucky bun parent some hope. I had seen a comment from a kind human that said basically don’t panic, people tend to share good news less than we share bad news. It was the only shred of hope I was able to hold onto.

Last Monday, my vet found a small abscess in my boys jawbone. He recently got his 6 front teeth pulled out, it gave the abscess a perfect home to take up space in. I had asked for a thorough exam because he wasn’t eating as much as he normally would.

She squeezed out what she could, flushed out the hole, packed it with a Clindoral Gel (clindamycin) long term release ball, and sent us home with 14 days worth of oral Enrofloxacin (antibiotics) and some gabapentin/meloxicam/critical care.

We had our follow up today and doc said the abscess hasn’t filled back up. She squeezed as hard as she could, nothing came out.

I know it’s still very early in the recovery, and I don’t know how long the Clindoral packet will stay in his jaw, and I don’t know if I will need to get it replaced but, the posts I was reading had me dropping my rabbit off today full ugly crying while asking the vet to euthanize this rabbit who I truly cannot picture my life without. The posts had me convinced that there was no hope for us to get this out of his jawbone.

I’ll continue to monitor and update his progress, please feel free to reach out no matter how old this post gets. I hope this post gives someone some hope or some knowledge on how their vet could handle this. Please keep my Frankie in your thoughts, and let me know how you got your bunnies through jawbone abscesses. I truly don’t know what I would do without him.
