I have very little experience with rabbits. I have a dog and cat so I'm not new to pets but bunnies always seemed…too fragile or delicate for me. Enter Gulliver to show me how wrong I was.
My husband found Gulliver by our trash cans four days ago. Actually, our cat found Gulliver. He was skinny, scraggly, but still social and my husband gave him some Napa cabbage and the next day he was still outside so my husband put pictures of him online and knocked around on neighbors doors to ask if they had lost a bunny.
"A black bunny?" Asked the girl next door.
"Yes is he yours?"
"No but I saw a black bunny sitting in your yard with your cat the other day."
Okay, great. We get him a cage and more cabbage and move him in to the house. We give him unlimited Timothy hay and some rabbit pellets and water and try not to balk at the immense amount of poop. He's nice. He will come up to the door of the cage and when I pet him he lowers his head and half closes his eyes and doesn't try to bite me or run. I'm starting to really like him.
One of his ears is really damaged and he has a scar right in the middle of his face. He's so dirty. His four feet and butt are caked in…mud? Poop? He has big mats on each side of his neck. But he's working on it. He's eating (lots) and cleaning himself. And drinking lots of water. He seems happy. He's so sweet.
We took him out in the yard this afternoon and he runs around and digs and jumps and kicks. He comes up to me outside and let's me pet him. The cat forces her way outside and she comes right up to him and they touch noses and then he jumps towards her and she runs away. They play chase back and forth; can a bunny and a cat become friends this fast? I have met dogs who aren't this social after four days.
I'm going to try and help him clean up. Gentle brushing. The internet says I can do a butt bath in the sink and maybe we will do that tomorrow. It's gotta be a lot for this little guy but he is a SURVIVOR.
I'm going to love him so much. I'm going to figure out how to be a good bunny mom and give him cabbages and radishes and carrots.
If you have any advice or words or encouragement I would love them.
