My rabbit recently experienced a very close call, he had been rapidly losing weight that was hardly noticeable under his fur, because he had been eating less and less (I have two rabbits, so I wasn't able to tell just how much he was eating on his own). I took him to the vet when I noticed he was acting very off one morning, and refusing to eat much. He was weak and going into the beginning stages of stasis which we learned was most likely the result of dental issues (I have lop bunnies, they're much more prone to them). She gave me pain meds for his teeth, an appetite accelerant and I bought some critical care for him. I was really worried I was gonna lose him… Even the vet said she was very worried he may not survive.
After about a week of meds, and syringe feeding he survived, gained his strength back, and has been slowly gaining weight since then. Whew…
He needs to gain more weight before he can handle the anesthesia he needs for dental care, so I've been trying to fatten him up for a bit.
So since I have leftover critical care, I made some treats out of it.
I used equal parts critical care and soaked pellets, and added mashed strawberries/water until the consistency resembled a dough.
cut them into shapes, baked them at 325° for about 40min. And left then in the oven while the oven cooled so they dry completely.
My bunnies really love them, and I'm keeping them around to fatten Kirby up while he recovers.
