URGENT! Bunny chewed electrical wires

I’m sitting here, about to cry as I type this. My bun got under the bed while I was asleep and chewed through the electric wires that run through the wall into my TV cable. This morning when I woke up he was still under there, and the wire was somewhat on his back. I got him out from under there, and he’s acting completely normal but it doesn’t take away from my worries. In the last picture you can see the pieces on the floor from him chewing it, but I don’t think he ingested any. He is eating fine, drinking fine, and hopping about while still being mischievous trying to get under there again. The golden wires in the picture are copper. If anyone took their time to read this, thank you, and any feedback will be highly highly appreciated.

  1. Don’t worry, I’ve been through this maaaaaaaaaany times with my bunny. You should buy some cord covers or just make the area 100% unaccessible. I don’t think it caused any harm (this time)

Looks like 80% of the cords in my house. Learning to replace/repair electrical cables should be included in bunny manuals

That’s coax cable isn’t it? That’s not a power cable it’s the signal cable from your tv aerial/cable connection.

You need to protect all cables by adding shielding of some form or running them somewhere out of reach

I spent $50 last month replacing cables. It’s a feature of a rabbit living in a human space, not a bug.

Update: just this morning Roger ate my laptops charger. I don’t even know how he did it, I was watching him.

  5. Bunnies will always be drawn to wires, no matter how hard you try to hide them. On the plus side, I’m great at using screw terminals now so I don’t have to keep buying new cables😂
Your bun should be just fine. Just try to bunny proof to the best of your abilities.

  6. no worries, spicy hay is a critical part of a healthy buns diet!

but seriously, your bun will be fine. mine have chewed their fair share of wires and have lived to tell the tale!

  7. I had to elevate every energy cable in my house. My rabbit already chewed two cellphone chargers and an earphone

Welcome to the wonderful world of having a rabbit 😅 don’t worry, he’ll be fine – my little punks have chewed through more wires than I care to count despite my significant efforts to keep all cords away from them. If he made that much progress on it it clearly wasn’t hurting him too bad and generally if electrocution happens its an instant thing rather than a delayed effect.

  9. you can buy cable covers for like $8 on amazon. I would also barricade the area as much as possible.

Cable covers (also called cable shielding), you’ll likely want to replace that wire because of the exposed copper (fire hazard), and if you are up for some diy, garden hoses make excellent cable shields

Your rabbit is fine, but definitely replace and make the cables inaccessible.

Mine has gone for MacBook chargers before. She’s okay. Just had expensive taste.

My bunnies have chewed through so many wires and are doing just fine. It’s not ideal, but it happens. Just keep an eye on him.

This happens to all of us. Pooh bit through my fiber cable and I had to call the AT&T repairman. It was only fixed for 5 min and Pooh ran back over and broke it again. I had to have the same repairman come back out the same day! We laughed and laughed until I got the $200 bill. I learned from this and the repairman ran my fiber out of Pooh’s reach.

When my bun was new it chewed up a good amount of cables. Nothing high power, so that was a relief. But I basically reorganized everything. For a while I was safe, then the bunny figured out a path to hop up on a table and chew more wires. So I reorganized everything again and so far haven’t had any further problems.

The moral of the story is that bunnies are like the raptors from Jurassic Park. Just when you think you got them on lockdown “life, uh, finds a way”.

I think bunnies just like the sensation of chewing on certain things? My bunny will chew up plastic or anything that has a “gummy” texture like certain shoes, but I don’t think it’s ever eaten any. Your bunny might be different though, so keep an eye on it either way.

I don’t want to alarm you and hopefully you’re bun is okay but I will share my experience as seeing this hit me hard. We had a tiny lionhead many years ago who found her way to what we thought was a protected coax TV cable. She shredded the cable. I didn’t know at the time, and my partner was unaware, alone with her all say after it happened. She seemed fine at first but became ill, stopped eating, didn’t run when she was picked up etc. I came home frm work and she was resting in her house. Three hours later I found her dead. This is why I find it hard to chuckle when people make the spicy hay jokes. You can’t assume they’ll always be safe or that they won’t just find a way one day.

Ours was tiny and she did manage to chew the cable to the core in several places but I highly recommend getting to the vet at the earliest sign of any upset. Wishing you and your bun the best.

My Bob got mad that I said it’s bedtime and he jumped onto my lap and bit my phone charging cable while it was charging my phone that was in my hand!! Cheeky monster. Literally snapped it halfway through in one bite and then stared at me like “fight me.” Needless to say he went to his night enclosure and I had to get a new charger. I could see the electricity snapping between the cords and he wasn’t even bothered about biting it. Ate some hay as soon as I threw it at him (not literally), no mouth burns, nothing.

    Anyways yours should be fine.

Rabbit chewed internet cable during lockdown. Husband missed meeting and kids half a school day while I ran to a store to get a replacement. Streets looked like a zombie film. Ashley is very much alive eating my coffee table now

It’s not electrical in the sense of providing power. It’s a data cable. Low voltage. Bunny is fine. Your video quality is not.

I got my bunny a nice expensive personal AC unit for his room so he could stay extra cool in the summer. He got mad at me for getting it second hand instead of buying a brand new one. So he chewed the inch thick cord in half. That was almost 3 years ago and he was not remotely harmed by the ordeal. Your bun is almost certainly going to be fine. I’m sure the game was destruction and not ingestion. Chin up, but good on you for watching him closely.

Looks to be more of a cable coax wire.. non electrical.. but the coppers strains and rubber etc can be toxic to any animal.. may have to do an x ray to see if there is any copper ingested
