One of my bunny suddenly died, how can I make it easier for the one still alive.

Hi everyone,

I woke up today and one of my bunny was acting weird. Bought her to the ER and she had to be put down ๐Ÿ˜ญ. It was so sudden, she was acting fine yesterday.

I’ve been crying all day and I don’t know how to take care for my other bunny. They are both free roaming and they have access to my outdoor patio. The one still alive has been looking for her for the past 15 hours. He doesn’t want to be pet ๐Ÿ™

What can I do to make it easier for him?

They had been together for a year and loved each other very much.

Iโ€™m sorry you lost your bunny.

Iโ€™ve heard some people get a stuffed bunny or stuffed animal the living bunny can cuddle with. Give extra attention, maybe put on a video or radio to help keep company when you arenโ€™t there. If they arenโ€™t free roam maybe move their pen to a more busy area in the home.

Just try and spend time with your little boy. Give him love and nanners, or whatever his favorite treat is. This is time for both of you to cope. It would have been helpful if you could had taken them together that way he could have closer with her. But it’s understandable if that wasn’t possible. Think about getting another bunny to be friends with your boy so that he has someone to be with.

Did he see your other bun after she passed away? Iโ€™ve heard it helps them understand that the dead bun isnโ€™t coming back. However, if you donโ€™t have the body then perhaps thereโ€™s nothing you can do at this point.

Itโ€™s possible that your bun would bond to another girl bun pretty quickly. Bunnies have short lifespans and they will move on to love a new partner.

Of course, itโ€™s understandable if *you* arenโ€™t ready for a new bun yet.

I had a dog pass away and the brother was left behind unfortunately like us animals will always wonder where their beloved friend went and will never forget them, he had separation anxiety until the day we recently had to put him down, just love your bunny as best you can and comfort them any time they seem down, it’s hard on them just like it is for you, take comfort in their company

    Sorry for your loss.

Depends a bit how old your bunnies were, but it’s completely possible to bond them with new friend and that would be the best solution. Bunnies are social animals.

We lost our female bunny when they were 8 years old. After a bit of searching we found a female rescue who was about same age.

Bonding wasn’t easy, took a lot of effort (it’s always individual, so don’t be discouraged, sometimes it goes really fast), but finally they accepted each others and lived happily for 2.5 years.

Now our male bunny has just passed (due to old age mostly) and the female rescue (who is now closing to 11y) is alone. Not sure we can find a new friend at this point, so we’re just trying to be “surrogates” and give her as much human company as possible.

So sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting another partner for him since bunnies are social creatures. The best and cheapest way would be to take your bunny to a shelter that does “speed dating” and find him a female that he gets along with immediately or naturally. Shelter bunnies will have already been spayed which will save you money. You also won’t have to gamble with the bonding process, which isn’t easy in many situations. The speed dating session will minimize the risk with that not working.

So sorry for your loss. You can give him a new toy to help him get distracted from his loss
