Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha. Oryctolagus cuniculus includes the European rabbit species and its descendants, the world’s 305 breeds of domestic rabbit. Sylvilagus includes 13 wild rabbit species, among them the seven types of cottontail.
Rabbits are meticulously clean animals and are easy to house break and train. Much like a dog, a pet rabbit can be taught to come to his/her name, sit in your lap, and do simple tricks.
Happy rabbits practice a cute behavior known as a âbinky:â they jump up in the air and twist and spin around!
A baby rabbit is called a kit, a female is called a doe, and a male is a buck. A group of rabbits is called a herd.
Rabbits are herbivores, eating a diet entirely of grasses and other plants. Because their diet contains so much cellulose, they pass two different kinds of feces to completely break down their food. While other grazers will chew and swallow their feed, then âburpâ it back up (as cows chew cud), rabbits will re-ingest their feces on the first pass to get all of the nutrients they need.
The average size of a rabbit litter is usually between 4 and 12 babies, which results after a short 30-day gestation. Male rabbits can reproduce as early as 7 months of age, and females as early as 4 months. This means in one year a single female rabbit can produce as many as 800 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren!
A rabbitâs life span is about 8 years, though sterilized rabbits (those who are spayed/neutered) can live as long as 10-12 years.
A rabbitâs teeth never stop growing! Many people believe they need to chew to keep their teeth short. While they do enjoy chewing, itâs the normal wear from where their top and bottom teeth meet that keeps a rabbitâs teeth short.
Can you guess what other domestic animal is similar to rabbits? A horse! They have similar eyes, teeth, and ears (those belonging to many prey animals), as well as a similar diet and behavior. Clearly, their size is much differentâŠ
A rabbit symbol is often used to show that a product was not tested on animals. This is because rabbits have traditionally been used in product safety testing.
Bunnies cannot vomit, so it is super important to feed them only healthy, fresh, appropriate food.
Rabbits communicate using a secret code. Well, itâs not actually a secret code, but you could be forgiven for thinking it is because their body movements are so subtle. Bunnies clench their facial muscles and change their body position when they are feeling worried; signs you wouldnât notice if you werenât looking out for them. This is one of the main reasons why theyâre so often misunderstood, particularly by children. These masters of hearing can turn their ears 180 degrees. Wow. And that impressive rotation can pinpoint the exact location of a sound. Bunnies love company and become lonely and sad when they don’t have companions of their own kind
Rabbit – sniff
A rabbit’s diet should be 90 per cent hay. Access to a constant supply prevents their teeth overgrowing, like this.. Most overgrown tooth problems are preventable. Many owners see making multiple trips to the vet because their bun has developed a tooth or associated mouth problem, like abscesses, as part and parcel of giving a rabbit a home. But the vast majority of rabbit tooth troubles can be prevented simply by feeding them the right diet. Rabbits need a constant supply of hay or fresh grass to nibble on â in fact, 90 per cent of their daily diet should be made up of the stuff. An endless supply of hay and grass are essential if bunnies are to maintain digestive and dental health. Note: freshly cut grass is toxic to rabbits, so should not be fed to them. Young rabbits that donât have enough space to run about are more likely to break bones, according to studies. This is because they donât get the right opportunities to build up their bodies properly.
