Please share eye surgery success stories so I can try to not go insane

Apologies if you saw this post earlier! I need to ramble to calm my nerves.

Elwood has had chronic eye issues in his left eye for 2 years. They have significantly worsened in the last 2 weeks, and at yesterday’s vet appointment, it was decided that his eye needs to be removed. For other animals, that’s not a huge deal, but because rabbits are literally terribly designed, it’s a very risky surgery, so naturally, im freaking out.

In addition to the surgery itself, I’m really anxious about what’s causing this. We aren’t positive of the exact cause right now, and won’t know until after surgery. He is getting tested for EC, to see if it decided to “attack” the eye. It could also be glaucoma. Or, of course, it could be an abscess.

My partner’s rabbit had a retrobulbar abscess, and underwent 15+ procedures on it and was on consistent medication for 2 years. We were happy to do it for him, but it was not easy, and it did eventually become unmanageable. So I don’t have a great history with abscesses, and I’m extremely stressed.

His abscess was a result of tooth root disease, and my vet doesn’t seem suspicious of that with Elwood, but we won’t know until he’s gotten surgery.

I’m hoping, if it is an abscess, it will be fully cleaned out because the eye is being removed, and the vet will have access to the space behind his eye. I would love if it wasn’t an abscess. But I just keep circling back to that.

So- all of that said- if you’ve had good experiences with eye removals, retrobulbar abscesses and the like, I would love to hear your success stories so I can stop pacing my house like an anxious zoo animal until his surgery on Tuesday.
