what is this crazy digging behaviour?

my 2–3yr neutered minilop boy is obsessed with digging, pushing, biting and pulling at the blankets on the side of the bed i don't sleep on, and also at my pillow and the overhanging blankets on my side. he goes at it so frequently and so intensely he's actually frayed and pulled out threads in my blankets, and often wakes me up at night! (that's not a problem, just underlining how intense/energetic/aggressive the behaviour is!)

attention, pats, snuggles and playing doesn't seem to deter him/be what he's after! could he be trying to tell me something? i said the behaviour is "aggressive" before, but he also tends to do a lot of licking the blankets during, and moves away if i put my hands in front of his mouth. sometimes he bites me accidentally but it's clear he doesn't mean to—he immediately defers and moves his head away from that spot rather than running away altogether.

added context: we love each other very much and he trusts me implicitly. runs to me whenever he's alarmed, switches between "hiding" behind me (i'm the protector) and "guarding" in front of me (he's the protector). often stretches out on my bed beside me and otherwise approaches frequently for pats, snuggles and kisses. lone bun in my company 24/7 until we get out of this financial rut.
