Seeking advice from anyone with EC experience.
1. Was the vet’s delay a key factor of my rabbit’s recovery?
2. Is there anything else I can do to help her? Is there any hope for recovery?
3. Is she suffering?
PART 1
Our beloved 9yo holland lop Dixie was rushed to the emergency vet an hour after showing signs of immobility. The first nurse that saw her initially thought she had a stroke. After speaking with the vet, they suggested blood work and an x-ray. After 6 hours of testing and waiting, I was told there was no way to test for E Cuniculi and the vet sent her home with vertigo medication. The vet also recommended further testing with an MRI, CT scan, ultrasound and an echocardiogram. After a sleepless night I called the vet and begged for the antiparasitic medication and she finally started treatment 24 hours after symptoms. Could Dixie have recovered if there was no delay in her starting treatment?
PART 2
This is everything we’ve done for her in the last 9 weeks.
- 28 day Panacur treatment.
- Antibiotic for the eye she lays on. We believe she will never regain eyesight in that eye.
- Vitamin B
- Soft padded area with pillows to prevent her from rolling and causing injury.
- She was hand fed critical care and water for 2 weeks.
- She was hand fed timothy hay, veggies and pellets the weeks after that. She has finally been able to eat on her own in recent weeks and she still has a strong appetite.
- We have puppy pee pads lining her padded area and we change these out once she urinates to prevent urine scald. I’ve bought 4 kinds of pee pads and none soak up very much liquid fast enough.
She still has a strong head tilt and cannot hold herself upright. Without the support pillows she rolls violently to her left. Is there anything else we can do to help her? Is there any hope for recovery?
PART 3
It breaks my heart to see her this way. We have loved her for 9 years. She was a free roam bunny with her own bedroom, a subscription to Small Pet Select, health insurance, all the toys that she could want and a diet of organic fruits and veggies. She is deeply loved by us along with her grandparents and the rest of my family. These days she is incapable of controlling her movements. We’re doing everything we can to keep her comfortable. Is Dixie in pain? I can’t come to terms with the alternative but I don’t want her to suffer.
Please, help.
