Update after my girl that was spayed today

First of all I wanted to thank everyone for your reassuring words! About an hour and a half after she went under the anesthesia we got a call that the surgery went well and she started to wake up quickly. I was extremely relieved and hoped we can take her home today but after another hour they called again to say that she is doing well but isn’t fully herself yet and we could take her home if we want to but she would have to be supervised the whole night in case we have to force feed her so they’d rather she stays there. I obviously agreed and I am glad that she’s in good hands during the critical recovery time but I am so terrified again about something going wrong. I’m wondering if it’s normal for vets to keep bunnies overnight after surgery? Or did she lie to me that everything is fine and they do have some worries? What are the chances of something happening to her after she already fully woke up? Please share if you have any experiences with that.

It depends entirely on the vet. If you have the budget and don’t want to stress about assist feeding, hospitalizing them for a day after any major surgery with the clinic isn’t a bad idea.

  2. My vet mandates an overnight care for both spay/neuter surgeries. I think iht’s good that they’ll keep an eye on her!

Every bun is different but it’s not unusual for it to take a bit longer for females to recover. The last girl i had spayed took over a day to eat on her own again, in which case they have to be assist fed. If theyre stable, my vet will generally send them home with pain meds and assist feed, but some other vets may rather monitor themselves.

Yay good news 😊 it is completely normal for a vet wanted to keep a female rabbit overnight after a spey. They get a bigger dose of anesthetic so take longer to come right. She is in good hands and she will be syringe feed and in good shape to go home tomorrow.
To be quite honest anything can go wrong with rabbits that cause them to crash fast but sounds like your girl is doing well.

    Good luck 😊

The first night that my female bunny was spayed she was so lethargic that I was scared. The next few days I had to keep her in a small area because she was back to her wild self! I gave her some vet subscribed pain killer for the first few days though.

I’m glad they kept her to monitor her, that’s very responsible of them.

That’s a good thing they want to make sure she is eating, pooping and drinking on her own. They also can do pain management through the night and give motility messing required.
