Shy bun may need a partner— thoughts?

Hi everyone!

I rescued my sweet bun Rufus in September of 2025. He’s a sweetheart but is very slowly coming out of his shell. Sometimes I think we’re making progress, then he seems unsure all over again. I don’t rush him or force him to do anything he doesn’t want to. He was surrendered at an animal hospital in LA and reports say whoever owned him didn’t take care of him. His appearance was not the best, hair matted, ears infested with mites and a piece of his ear is also missing. So my baby boy definitely has some past trauma.

I will say my partner moved in 2 months ago and that’s when I started seeing some regression again. The vet said he is most likely claiming his territory again or just unsure of the new person in the home.

My local shelter offers bonding services and they have a ton of girl buns right now. Part of me really wants to do it for my bun Rufus. But I’m also nervous when it comes to having 2 buns in the home.

Has anyone else had similar experience? Just wanted to get some other points of view behind it.
