Bunny

Bunny eating but not pooping

Bunny was neutered yesterday. I got him back around 6:30 PM & reduced the size of his play-pen & got him a low-height litter box, as per various posts here. He has only produced one piece of stool since then. He wasn't eating on his own but ate a bit (y'day & twice today) when I hand-fed him, but that wasn't enough either, so I gave him critical care (which he managed to spill & I couldn't wipe all the blots).

He loves alfalfa hay but ate very little of it (only while I hand-fed him).

Is this normal post-surgery? Temporary ileus is normal in humans post-surgery (lungs/abdominal/pelvic) as well, but in his case, could it lead to GI stasis

UPDATE: Pooping resumed around 2 AM PT on March 20, almost 36 hours after his surgery.

Someone with an enormous amount of experience with bunnies just told me that I should not restrict his movement, as that might slow his gut. I’ll let him out (supervised) & will increase the size of his play-pen.

It’s probably post op and change of environment- if he stops eating and acts sluggish get him to the vet asap

  3. i recommend a couple drops of baby gas drops and a tummy massage. surgery, stress, and meds can cause a tummy ache that needs some help to get moving again. but check in with your vet if possible!

Stay on top of his pain meds. You should have been given at least a few days worth, but I like to go longer, 5 or so. Just no need for them to risk being sore when it is easily averted.

Edit to add: He looks very alert and playful to me. It’s probably just left over from the anesthesia, but I’d still stay on top of his meds.

We had the same… took him to emergency he got another injection to push some. He was eating just refusing to drink. Try to syringe some water into him. Our went 20h with no poo then drop loads then 14h nothing again he had 1 wee a day only too. Vet said he is ok well he was… his belly was squishy and he was active but… we moved his litter from too of the hutch so he could be kept at floor level. We put litter back after 3 days post op and first thing he did was loads of poos and massive pee. He was down all morning and it was mainly litter location that caused all of this 🤦🏻‍♀️
