Apparently a hot topic currently, bunnies and head tilt.
Head tilt is sadly quite a common condition in rabbits, caused by various health conditions most notably middle ear disease and EC. We’ve seen far more cases of head tilt caused by middle ear infection than we have EC and it’s really important to remember that EC isn’t the be all and end all in headtilt cases, thorough diagnostics must be preformed to fully understand the cause and map out a treatment plan.
Isn’t it cruel to allow a rabbit to live with head tilt?
Absolutely not. While, undeniably, some rabbits aren’t able to thrive with such a condition, a lot of them truly are and I think it’s very important that each rabbit is assessed individually for their ability and not blanked deemed unable to live, undeserving of life. If the animal can carry out their normal activities, if they can live without pain then why should they die? Doesn’t really make sense, does it.
We’ve had many headtilt bunnies over the years, we’ve gained a lot of experience with this disability and it’s very obvious to us when a rabbit is or isn’t thriving with the condition.
All of our headtilt bunnies are fully assessed and all necessary treatment is provided to them by an exotics specialist vet.
We know each of them individually and personally, we literally breathe, sleep and live rabbits day in and day out, so trust us when we say that our head tilt wonkies are doing just fine 🫶
