My girl, Noelle, 3months, is Agressively! Determined!! to be friends with my boy, Mochi, 5 yrs (neutered!).
TLDR: I’m worried about her injuring herself overnight or when I’m out of the house.
Would it be very detrimental to her to put her in a 47×18” pet store cage overnight so she can remain close to the other rabbit without hurting herself?
Noelle is a high jumper and the wall between them is easy for her to leap, even with the partial roof on her side.
We were out for a few hours on Thursday for school but came home to find her happily hanging out on his side of the cage.
I checked them for injuries and there were none.
She went back.
I came downstairs Friday morning to the same scene, only this time she was in the middle of the living room, having escaped via his side and then pushing the tunnel that extends out from his cage until she can get out.
(The ability of the tunnel to move isn’t a problem for him, as he’d rather be in his enclosure than anywhere else in the world).
I put her back, secured the walls and the tunnel with zip ties
I walked out and heard a thump.
I went back in to find she had hopped up on the partial roof of her cage and was in the process of jumping back to where her friend is. I had stuff to do, so into the bathroom she went. Also, I turned the partial roof into a higher wall.
The door was mostly but not completely closed. There was an x-pen around the perimeter of the bathroom to prevent escape and chewing baseboards. See the picture for how that went. 🤦♀️
Keeping her in the bathroom until they are bonded is not a good long term solution.
I need them to be near enough to each other to get comfortable with each other, but I also want to keep them apart until she’s spayed in May so the bond that does develop isn’t completely undone.
Would it be detrimental to her to put her in a store bought hutch inside her cage overnight?
I’m genuinely worried about her injuring herself in her escapes or eating something she shouldn’t while I’m asleep.
She gets loads of free roam time during the day.
In fact she is sweetly snuggled up on my lap right now.
