Bunny

Cataracts

Hi!

My bunny who tested positive for long term exposure to EC last April has suddenly developed a milky patch in his right eye. I only noticed this properly yesterday (it’s dark in the morning before leaving for work and dark once getting back!)

I have searched the internet, of course, as a panicked owner would and it suggests that the EC infection can cause this.

For context – Muffin is 4 1/2 years old (young for what I have seen to be onset cataracts due to age). In April last year he experienced 4 bouts of stasis within a 4 week period for unknown causes and was hospitalised. We had a follow up appointment with our exotic vet to establish if there is a root cause, and blood tests confirmed long term exposure and a high reading. We were prescribed a 40 day course of panacur and since then, other than a few minor ‘blips’, he has been fine.

He is absolutely himself, usual eating habits etc, the only difference is this sudden change in his eye. I have booked an appointment with our exotic vet for Tuesday which was the earliest we can be seen. I can’t know for sure if it is related to EC, but it’s likely being he has the infection.

I’m wondering if anybody else has experienced this, has any advice or information? It’s a lot of unknowns, and I appreciate each case would be unique, but is this likely to get worse? Will he lose vision? If it’s EC related, would medication ‘stop it in its tracks’ as such? I’ve seen it’s almost envitable he’ll get it in his other eye, which is heartbreaking. I’ve seen a lot to suggest buns adapt well to something like this, I just want to do what I can to help, if at all possible!

Thanks 🐰
