Hi everyone,
I’m hoping I’m get some advice on what could be going on with my bunny, Harper.
A couple months ago he was diagnosed with arthritis in his front right paw and started taking gabapentin and meloxicam. He was doing well on those and then around the end of December he started showing signs of what we thought was arthritis in his back right leg. Within a week, he didn’t want to put any weight on his back legs or walk and he lays like he’s splooting or will sometimes keep his legs under himself. He isn’t paralyzed, as he has still moves his legs and toes.
After taking him to the vet and getting blood work and X-rays, they ruled out EC and found no broken bones or injuries but did say his bladder had some sludge. We started him on sub q fluids to help flush his bladder and after a week he still didn’t show any signs of wanting to walk but didn’t show any other signs of decline.
The vet did X-rays again a week later and found that the sludge improved but he had some calcium build up in his ureter. She thought that the sludge or amount of calcium build up wouldn’t necessarily be the cause of what was going on with his legs and suggested that they are secondary symptoms to something bigger such as a brain tumor. She also said that flushing the ureter wasn’t possible and that we should continue with the pain meds and sub q fluids and watch for any changes. We also started giving him urinary support tabs from Sherwood pet health.
Here we are about 6 weeks after everything started and he hasn’t shown any other signs of decline but still isn’t walking. We gently stretch and move his legs and toes everyday and put a little weight of his legs. The upside to this, I guess you could say, is that he’s the biggest cuddle bug now. He loves taking naps with us and will lay for endless pets. Obviously, I’d rather he be able to walk though!
Has anyone experienced something like this with their bun? Any thoughts on what could be going on? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
