Neighbors has a pet “free range neighborhood” rabbit

Hey guys,

Last week, Sunday night, my boyfriend was dropping by me off in front of my house when a bunny walked out from under my car. I immediately knew it was someone’s pet, and there are tons of owls and coyotes in the area. It was 10pm and I had a 4am flight but I told him we needed to catch the bunny so we spent about an hour chasing it all over the neighborhood.

We finally caught the bunny and took it inside. I went on a trip to Vegas and was gone for three days but had lost my car keys and my mom retraced my steps down to a side street where my neighbors live. They stopped her and asked what she was doing, and she explained to them I lost my car keys while chasing the bunny. She described the bunny and my neighbors told her that was her pet. She said it’s an outdoor bunny, he’s free range across the neighborhood and he comes by the yard for food so they leave a bowl out. She told my mom he’s been out for 4 months and to release him.

The next day the neighbors mom came to my door asking for the bunny back. My mom told her that the daughter had told us to release the bunny. The grandma was shocked and said the bunny had escaped by digging out of their chicken coop. My mom said she had released the bunny but the grandma said she hadn’t seen it visit since. She said they typically see the bunny streets down and even miles down in other neighborhoods but they haven’t been able to touch him.

We think something is off with their stories, these are the same people who caught a wild fowl and gave it to us to keep as a pet when I was a kid. (We have chickens and goats so people frequently gave us animals).

They also had spotted a rooster that they tried to catch but didn’t succeed. My mom tried to catch the same rooster and it was too fast. So if they are willing to try and keep chickens why would they leave their pet bunny to run wild? The poor bunny was covered in ticks.

He is also stained with a yellow line (you can see in the photo) it looks like maybe he had a diaper or something on frequently that stained him?

What is the correct thing to do here?
