My two besties are mini lops, 8 years old now and over time have been showing signs of aging. They are siblings, from the same litter so they have similar symptoms but overall different so far.
Larry (the void) has been experiencing symptoms of EC since last year and has had regular check ups/physical therapy on his wry neck since then. He’s recovered significantly and has very little days now that he gets into a slight spin. He has always been a fairly lazy bun that enjoys lots and lots of naps and munching hay while he’s mid nap (and lying down awake lol). Overall, his activity levels have decreased like he can’t hop very high anymore but he still does what I call “popcorn binkies”. Which are these tiny little hops of joy.
I’ve been looking into him possibly having signs of arthritis and will be asking our rabbit savvy vet soon for testings so I can jump on some relief for him sooner than later.
Lu (the tortellini) is still very energetic with lots of zoomying and binkies, but for the past 3 years have been a huge issue with her gut mobility. We are having 3-4+ scares a year now and it’s hard. After doing a lot more research, asking lots of questions, I’ve concluded she needs waaay less fruit in her diet. Even a little banana will upset her stomach some days.. I ordered some probiotics today to hopefully help with that as it has helped before in the past. Same with her, I want to look into some testing to make sure her levels are okay as well.
I read one of the signs of EC can be slow gut mobility and considering they’re siblings it’s very possible she’s beginning to show symptoms of it.
I feed them Sherwood pellets, only 4 tablespoons per bunny per day. I’ve been cutting back on that though, as some days I notice they now upset Lu’s stomach since pellets do expand. I’ve been looking into the Oxbow Senior pellets, but I just spent a butt load on 4 big bags of the Sherwood recently. 🥲
I would love to bake them some treats that don’t have banana or carrot, almost every recipe I find has those ingredients. Any ideas or recommendations?
Also, any advice for senior care is greatly appreciated. 💕 They are my first bun friends and have been with me since they were a few months old. Every year has been entirely new to me, but worth every single second.
I forgot to mention, we are definitely a consistent fresh greens family! I’m vegan so I eat with them every day.✌️😂
