Why are non-rabbit owners like That

Full transparency I'm a first time owner and have only had my boy for around 4 months so far — I was aware that the issue exists, but already have been dealing with so many of Those kinds of comments.
What is it about non-rabbit owners that makes them think it's so hilarious to constantly go on about killing and eating your pet?

My roommates family member visits every week and without fail the moment he sees me — upward of 5 times already — he will make a comment about making rabbit stew, or cooking my rabbit for Christmas dinner. Even if it was funny the first time (it wasn't) surely at some point you realise holy shit this "joke" is tired?

It's ridiculous that just because it's a less conventional/common pet they think it somehow makes it acceptable to talk about killing it.
As if by basis of them being rabbits that automatically makes them "lesser" than other pets, as if you can't have the same amount of love and the same level of bond with them.

I don't go around telling people I'm going to kill and eat their dogs/cats, even if some people do eat those meats around the world. It's common decency.
I mean really, what is it about rabbits that makes peoples manners fly out the window, and god forbid you talk back then you're just butthurt and can't take a joke.
