After my sweet Conway passed away I couldn’t bear to see my remaining bun Baxter so lonely so I went to “visit”
Theo at the shelter after peeking at his adoption listing for months, (and sending one email asking about his needs.) Of course he came home with me. He was brought in as a stray with two other bunnies that didn’t make it. He was so covered in pee his coat was yellow and he had such a bad URI he almost didn’t make it either. At one point he was rushed to the emergency vet after getting a bloody nose.
After much TLC at the shelter, including an affirmation wall, Theo was nursed back to health but the infection did permanent damage to his sinuses and now he has rhinitis which is mostly just a chronic case of the sniffles. He also snores and has little sneezing fits that sound like little beeps, and kind of grunts when he hops around and sounds like a piglet.
The shelter wanted to wait to find the right adopter as he was considered ‘medically needy’. Apparently ever since I’d shown interest when I emailed the shelter, the small animal counselor was hoping I’d finally come in for him as I have adopted two other older and special needs bunnies from them, and they knew I’d be ok managing his extra care.
He’s currently living his best life with me and his brother (bonding still ongoing, Theo is a face humper and likes to pick fights.) He HAD to be adopted out with his giant Lamb Chop best friend who is three times his size. He spends most of his down time grooming Crusty Lamb (hence the name) and laying on his back or hind legs.
To keep him healthy I do lots of vacuuming and blanket changes, he takes a banana flavored meloxicam chewable daily to address the sinus inflammation, and has a personal air purifier and humidifier.
He’s still learning how to be a bunny, he doesn’t really ‘get’ toys and is still getting used to be handled. Trimming his nails for the first time was an adventure. I also figured out he’s 100% deaf so I unintentionally startle him a lot. But he’s loves all his food and is a bottomless pit, the vet says he’s very healthy, all things considered. He’s so curious and brave, and he is such a sweet boy. I knew he was family from the first time I saw him.
