Hello, i have a neutered 3yo new Zealand rabbit that has grown quite comfortable around me since I adopted him a month ago.
Due to house layout and constraints with the people I live in, he sleeps in my bedroom and I recently could bunny proof the room to allow supervised free roam.
However this adorable little gentleman thumps loudly at night for attention/pets and won't stop until I give what he wants. I know thumping is natural communication behaviour. At night I prefer to keep him in his pen as I can't supervise free roam. I suppose he is bored. So I have a few questions
-
How can I help with his boredom when toys, food and before bed pet time isn't enough (i understand for him a human night of sleep is awfully long and quiet)?
-
How can I set up the "flooring" so the thumping is less loud ? It's an old house and my sisters have been complaining about it too. Would blankets help absorb the noise ?
-
What do you think about nighttime free roam?
-
Would a bunny buddy help ? (And if that's the case, would a dwarf be ok ? )
It's the only little issue I have with him. He's very well behaved and rarely thumps during the day since I can give him lots of attention.

Is he by himself?
If hes lonley the best solution is bonding him.
Also a good thick rug can do wonder in absorbing the impact and noise from a thump
When my free roam bunnies decided to thump or loudly chew cardboard at night, I call out and admonish them with “Guys! It’s sleep time for me!” and they’re honestly pretty good about listening. Sometimes a pet on their heads is required.
