(THEY DO NOT LIVE IN THOSE CAGES! FOR DEMONSTRATION ONLY!)
I’m doing an assignment for school where I’m talking about a new law that is being submitted to increase the cage size of rabbits and rodents. For fun I decided to make a cage that is the minimum size allowed as per the current laws.
For a rabbit up to 2 kg which one of mine are, the minimum size allowed is 0.5m2. Yes, 0.5. That is a 70x72cm cage. The the cage I made is 70×70 so it’s a TINY bit too small, 0.45m2 but still.
And for a rabbit that is 2-3.5 kg the smallest cage allowed is 0.7m2. So that is 100x70cm. Again the one I made isn’t exactly that, it’s slightly bigger, 105×70.
The fence I used is 35cm so it was a little harder but still.
If you think those numbers are insane, you’re right! They are! When I hadn’t made the cage I thought it’d be small but when I did it genuinely blew my mind.
Now the recommended size for one rabbit is around 3m2 and that is the law they are trying to adopt. Many rabbit owners have been really angry about this change and has claimed that it’ll be impossible for many to keep rabbits when they live in smaller apartments and such. I find this to be a completely ridiculous and unreasonable argument. I just wanted to share this because I thought my country had good laws but now I realize we really fucking don’t. The law will hopefully be enforced sometime in 2026 so we’re hoping for the best.
Both my rabbits are free roaming and my room is around 15-20m2, it’s a weird shape and I can’t be bothered with the real math. Maybe owners are of course taking good care of their rabbits but it still makes me sad when I go to the pet store and see all those cages knowing that some poor rabbit is living their entire life in one. I had my rabbits inside the cage of a total of 2 minutes maybe and they both showed signs of distress and tried to escape, (they weren’t smart enough to just jump out though lol.)
Is it the same in your country or do you have better laws?
