Thursday-
She passed away today by herself at 10am, she was scheduled to put down at 2pm so she survived 18 hours home with me. I will make the last update post soon including our last moments together.
.
Edit (Wednesday 10pm): Bad news.. She has some fluid in her lungs, was breathing worse than usual, her blood glucose was low and so was her body temperature (36c). Shes gotten even worse overnight and the new antibiotics haven't done anything. They think it could be sepsis and want to put her down
She said there's basically no chance of her recovering. Fuck my life.
I might have to do it today but I'm hoping it can wait til tomorrow because my mom has a 24 hour shift and won't be home till then. We got an appointment for 2pm tomorrow and will bury her afterwards
It's so stupid and unfair. My mom kept telling me that Jannu is getting old and asking me what am I going to do once she passes and whether I'm going to "replace" her. She would say mean stuff kime that when she was drunk. I asked her if she would ever replace our dog (she has heart failure and we have no clue how long she has left) and she said no. How is that any different? I hate how people still think rabbits are lesser animals than cats or dogs.

Hi! It’s been a few days since I took Jannu to the vet, so I thought I’d write an update and share the full story here. There’s quite a bit of context in the comments of my original post, but the timeline got a bit messy. It’s Tuesday, 9pm, as I’m writing this.
On Sunday night around 8pm, I noticed Jannu’s head tilting and moving back and forth, and her eyes were scanning or well moving up and down kind of (video on original post) . It was totally new and really unsettling. I made a Reddit post asking for advice and pretty much everyone told me to go to the vet. After sorting things out, I went with my sister and decided to leave Jannu there overnight so they could monitor her and give her whatever she needed.
One of her ears was very tight/closed, so they couldn’t get a proper look, but they suspected either an ear infection or possibly EC. They said they’d give her fluids and medicine (either subcutaneously, orally or through an IV) and do two X-rays. She seemed stable when I left. I got home around 1am and was way too anxious to sleep, maybe got three hours total.
The next day (Monday), they called around 10am, now even more sure it was an ear infection because of how different her ears looked. Her head was still tilted, and she was struggling to keep her balance, but she was moving around and drinking water on her own. The X-rays came back clean. They hadn’t seen her eat themselves but were syringe-feeding her every 3-4 hours.
They said the medicine might take a bit to kick in and that they’d call later that evening (or sooner if she got worse). They’d given her antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pain meds, something for the dizziness, and a dose of fenbendazole. I might be forgetting something, I’m terrible at remembering phone calls.
At around 5pm on Monday, they called again, and we agreed she’d stay another night. Her head tilt had gotten worse (one eye basically facing the ceiling), she was rolling at times and still not eating on her own. I brought up EC (again, I’d already mentioned it a few times), but they dismissed it. They said they’d update me the next day.
Tuesday 4pm, They told us she hadn’t improved, maybe even worsened. We decided to go see her and figure out what to do next. I asked again about E Cuniculi since several people mentioned she could have a flare-up from stress of being at the vet for so long and/or stress from having an ear infection and that it’d be smart to treat for both. The vet told me there was basically no chance it was EC because she’s an older rabbit, saying rabbits usually get it when they’re young from their mothers. What?? Like the parasite can’t stay dormant for years? Anyway, she left me alone with Jannu for 15 minutes, which I’m grateful for. I got to pet her and talk to her a bit.
When the vet came back, I asked if they could keep giving fenbendazole just in case. She said they gave it once but hadn’t continued it. I told her I’d feel better if they did, and she eventually agreed. She mentioned Jannu hadn’t moved at all. She basically couldn’t stand and was very floppy. The whites of her eyes were red, and her eyes looked cloudier than usual. She’s now on all the same meds as before, plus something to help with appetite and a new antibiotic. I don’t know if I’m forgetting anything here.
It just feels weird how she got so much worse right after they stopped fenbendazole, since she had been drinking water and moving around on her own before. I really hope I made the right call and that it’s not too late.
The vet gave me three options:
-
She stays another night and we see how she’s doing tomorrow.
-
I take her home with medication.
-
If she doesn’t get better… we might have to let her go.
I chose to let her stay another night to give the new antibiotic a chance.
I’ve received so many donations – around €465. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s honestly more than I ever expected and I’m so grateful to be able to get her treatment. The estimated bill is about €630 (probably less), plus medication costs. Now I’m just anxiously waiting for tomorrow’s call and hoping it’s not bad news. I’m really not ready to lose her.
