Rabbit bonding

Hi,

I have decided to finally adopt a second bunny to be a companion to my 2 year 8 months old male desex bunny. The new bunny is a desexed 2 year 2 months old female bunny. At the moment, they are in the prebonding stage and live in separate pens next to each other. I have been trying to scent swap their toys and Litterbox for brief periods of time.

Things seemed fine at the start and my bunny and the new bunny were ignoring each other and eating hay and going about their day. My bunny and the new bunny had even flopped and splooted in their playpens. However at around day 3, my male bunny had started to have moments where he would become agitated, pace around and start flinging around his toys, growl at me as I cleaned his litter box and dig towards the playpen the second bunny is in – today it was after a scent swap. He would ask for pets when I let him sniff my hand and would calm down but today, he would not calm down. He even thumped multiple times after my partner sneezed – he is used to sneezes but he m ran into his hut to hide after this. This morning, I noticed that both bunnies were sticking their noses through the playpen and I caught my bunny trying to nip the nose of the new bunny but she had flinched in time.

Since then, the new bunny has been hiding more in her house. She had been confident up till then and nonchalant to my bunny. She doesn’t have any injuries to her nose that I can see.

I have put up a cloth against the playpen so they can’t see each other. I have also brought my bunny into another room when he becomes agitated and he seems to fully decompress and would flop and run around. I then put him back into his enclosure before I sleep. During the Litterbox swaps, both bunnies went into the Litterbox and ate some hay from the other bunny’s Litterbox.

I’m not really sure if I’m doing this right and would appreciate some advice on what is going on. I feel very hopeless that this will work but really hope it can.

My bunny is usually a free roam desexed bunny in another room.

Thanks in advance
