Rabbit

Never say never

First, this sub has been so helpful in our rabbit journey, so thank you guys!

I never thought I’d have a pet rabbit. EVER. I am a cat person, and the dogs I like act more like cats (we have an American Akita). I worked in animal sheltering for years, doing adoption consultations for all types of animals, including rabbits. You really learn what you want and don’t want—breeds of dogs, small animals, etc. I never understood why one would really want a rabbit. I always just said “I don’t do rabbits” 😂

Fast forward 10 years, someone dumped this guy in our neighborhood last winter. He survived the summer, all the wildlife that we have, high temps, crazy storms, cats, stray dogs, cars, etc. The neighborhood took care of him collectively, but we were able to find a rescue to capture him in September, knowing he couldn’t last forever outside. We called him Bun Bun, and the rescue named him Stitch.

My boys (11 and 8) were so attached to the rabbit, and we decided to foster for the organization. Before he was in our care and still outside, we could hand him treats, but he would retreat with it. It has been so fun to see his little personality come out. He greets us for pets, pees in his litter box, plays and trusts us. It’s been so rewarding to see this, and I truly love him! We are going to adopt him once he is neutered. We have the ability to keep him and our Akita completely separate, and we plan to make a much larger space for him once he is neutered.

First pic is him now, 2nd pic is his 2nd day in our home. What a difference a month makes.
