Bunny

My bunny lost a big patch of fur.

Ciel has lost a big patch of fur under her chin. She isn't showing any signs of pain or discomfort. I have made a doctor's appointment but I was wondering if any of you have any idea what it might be? I couldn't get a better picture sorry. Her cage has also been cleaned thoroughly to make sure there's no bacteria to get on her skin.

Is she stressed out? I’ve heard of cats licking themselves bald. Did you find the fur at all? Maybe she was trying to make a nest.

Might just be molting then. Sometimes bunnies molt weird.

If your bunny is kept 24/7 in a cage then stress and boredom could be a big factor. I hope she gets to free roam, run around, jump and hang out for at least a few hours a day, the more the better.

If the skin looks clean then that’s good but it’s definitely good to go to the vet 🙂

is this your first year with this one? might be a wait and see situation. my old himalayan had a violent summer molt, I thought she was dying. 😅

Never seen that before. This happened overnight? The area does seem a little bit red as far as I can tell from the photo. Maybe she was trying to make a nest aggressively ripping her fur out.. idk as a bun parent myself, that’s kind of alarming. I would definitely seek a vet visit to make sure it isn’t some type of critical illness. Your bun is beautiful btw 🥺🫶

It’s probably stress :/ it’s very common in rabbits. But visit the vet to make sure it’s not something hidden. Meanwhile, try to reduce her stress and keep her distracted.

If she’s stressed (personally I think coz of doggy) chamomile tea, a few drops in her drinking water then sprinkle dry chamomile around her pen, its like catnip to rabbits, chills them out. If she’s been gnawing on the bars, maybe an infection from that. Could be her teeth are a problem or even mites.

Get her seen by the vet, they’ll no for sure.

Even so, she’s blinking ADORABLE!!! ❣️

Dies she have a partner who likes to clean her? Might sound stupid, but it’s possible (for stubborn buns. When our little one realised he could clean his adopted mum back he went overboard and she obviously felt too grateful to stop him. Big bold spot on her head without any fur, skin irritated)

Is she drooling or anything (possibly dental)? Did she dunk her lower mouth in her water to where this could be getting wet? Do you have more pics of it?

If there is a lack of other reason, I would guess stress. Buns need a lot of stimulation, all mine have been free roam. I would never keep them in a cage for more than your sleeping hours. Maybe there is an extra room the dog doesn’t go into? Really cute bun. I have a 5 y/o lionhead mix and that thing gets zoomies regularly and makes house rounds each morning, jumps on the fireplace mantle, jumps on and off the couch…honestly don’t think he could survive in a cage.

Could be molting. Also one time I didn’t trim Monsters nails short enough and she scratched under her chin and caused the hair to fall out cause it had small scabs.

  12. Thought that was the blood of the innocent dripping down its mouth for a moment

Could be stress/overgrooming, though that would be a difficult location for her to be pulling fur out of. Could be something more serious. Unfortunately the rabbit I had that suddenly developed patchy hair loss with mild skin irritation (really just looked a bit dry), it ended up being a symptom of lymphoma. Definitely would suggest asking for blood work and a skin scraping at minimum to help rule out other causes.

Ehh you probably know best out of the options which it is. Nesting, stress, molting, yeast, etc.

Check her teeth! This happened to my boy partly because his fur kept getting stuck in his teeth while grooming. The vet fixed his teeth and sit hasn’t been a problem since. He got neutered in the same appointment tho, that probably had an impact aswell (cause maybe it was a hormone issue? That’s just a speculation tho)

It can be hormonal, my little one does it and I thought that she was stressed but she does it every month and otherwise acts, completely normal, the vet said most likely hormonal

Sometimes cleaning their cage, their feeder or the floor of the house with products that can be harmful to animals causes them to go bald in certain areas. It happened to me with mine on my paws, I changed the floor cleaner for one suitable for pets and it didn’t happen again. Maybe that could be it.
