Florida homeowner paid $60,000 for Tesla solar, then Powerwall failed in hurricane blackout

A home battery backup can look good on paper and still fall short when the grid goes down.

One Florida homeowner says their nearly 12-kilowatt solar setup with a Powerwall 3 failed within about 20 minutes of a blackout caused by Hurricane Isaias, despite the battery being in storm mode and charged to 100%.

Here’s what to know

The homeowner shared their story with Reddit’s r/TeslaSolar forum. The original poster said they paid Tesla about $60,000 in cash for the system about five months ago and lost grid power during the October hurricane.

Once the blackout started, the homeowner said the Powerwall ran the house for about 20 minutes before the Tesla logo flashed red. Later, it reportedly came back in short spurts, powering the home for roughly 10 to 30 minutes at a time, suggesting an error that Tesla or the installer should be called to address.

Commenters streamed in to add their two cents. After one commenter raised the possibility that the system was overloaded, OP replied, “We have one PW3 installed, we are only drawing 0.9 kw, and have been since the storm. We are only charging phones and such, no AC or even lights,” seemingly putting to rest the overloaded theory.

Users in the thread suggested several other possible explanations, though no one confirmed a cause.

Several commenters disagreed on whether storm-damaged panels could be the culprit. One said they “could be shorting out the system” if the Powerwall 3’s built-in inverter detected a fault, while another argued that a short should knock out only the affected string rather than prevent the battery from running the home.

Another wrote, “Only advice you need is to contact the installer as everything, labor and materials, should be under warranty given this was all installed over the summer.”

“Call Tesla to see what the error is,” another urged.

What can be done?

While this homeowner needs to do some troubleshooting with their system, the thread also included a better outcome from another customer who said the same installer handled their project. This commenter shared, “My 26 panels withheld the winds of hurricane Isaias,” and said their system was working perfectly after the storm.

Indeed, battery storage can help protect a home during outages, save money on energy, and provide more energy independence when it performs as expected.

For homeowners considering a major battery purchase, exploring EnergySage can help compare home battery storage options and competitive installation estimates. EnergySage has teamed up with electrification brand Qmerit to help homeowners get the best price on home battery storage solutions and the best installer.

For households that do not need a whole-home system like this nearly 12-kW installation, Pila offers strong battery backup options. Pila’s plug-and-play batteries cost a fraction of a whole-home backup system and can back up even individual appliances.
