According to a report in Breaking Defense, Joint Task Force-Gold (JTF-Gold), established by US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) to coordinate and manage homeland air and missile defense capabilities under the Golden Dome for America initiative, has taken on a critical new mission: coordinating and leading the cyber defense of the entire architecture.

The task force’s deputy commander, Col. Kevin Stonerook, noted during the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual meeting that cyber warfare has become a central new mission set for the unit. Stonerook explained that the unit is working to build a broad coalition of stakeholders, including technology companies, commercial vendors, and various government agencies, to provide a comprehensive, resilient cyber defense umbrella protecting the complex system.

Breaking Defense further reported that Col. Stonerook emphasized that the task force’s cyber mission is strictly focused on defending Golden Dome infrastructure and systems against cyberattacks from potential adversaries, rather than conducting offensive operations abroad. JTF-Gold was established quietly earlier this year, with the commander of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC), Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, appointed to concurrently lead the new task force.

Based at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado, the unit is tasked with improving and synchronizing operational integration among the various military service branches within the US Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) portfolio.

Organizationally and historically, the new task force evolved from the former US Space Command Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense. Its original role was to coordinate and synchronize data from missile defense system assets across the entire joint force. Today, JTF-Gold comprises approximately 100 regular personnel, with its primary objective being to operationalize the Golden Dome concept for USNORTHCOM.

The unit is already actively involved in defining requirements, selecting locations, and establishing infrastructure for the first Golden Dome operational site at Fort Story, Virginia, and is expected to oversee similar processes for all future sites planned across the United States.

Alongside rapid progress on the ground, unit leadership acknowledges that many organizational and operational questions remain open. Transferring responsibilities from Space Command to NORTHCOM requires reallocating authorities and managing operational assets deployed in the field, while evaluating the necessity of operational redundancies between the commands. To address these complex challenges, the unit held an intensive planning conference with hundreds of experts, with an additional workshop scheduled for later this month. These meetings aim to clearly delineate the responsibilities of the project’s three main operations centers in Colorado and Florida, ensure proper resource allocation, and continue shaping the overarching concept of operations.
