An outbound tanker was struck on its port side by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, damaging the vessel, the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said.
All crew members were reported safe, and no environmental impact was reported, UKMTO said, citing the company’s security officer.
The incident occurred at 12:00 GMT, and authorities are investigating. Attacks on shipping intensify despite efforts by Gulf producers and the U.S. Navy to keep oil flowing through the vital waterway.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said late Saturday that an oil supertanker struck a naval mine and exploded while trying to leave the strait through an “unauthorized route,” and on Friday claimed a strike on an LPG carrier it said was using an “illegal route.”
On Saturday, a U.S. fighter jet disabled the Panama-flagged cargo ship Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman after it tried to breach the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
At least 93 ships have been hit and 24 sailors killed since the war began Feb. 28, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as attacks in the Strait of Hormuz continue.
