The price of raw sugar on the U.S. ICE exchange rose to its highest level in 19 months, reaching 20.9 cents per pound. The price surge was caused by unfavorable weather conditions and rains in Brazil, the world’s largest producer of sugarcane, which slowed down the sugarcane harvest.
Over the past month, sugar prices have risen by more than 15%, and by more than 25% over the past year, with the price of white sugar climbing to $554.2 per metric ton.
At the same time, due to weather concerns in Brazil, Arabica coffee rose to $2.992 per pound, and Robusta to $3,569 per metric ton. Meanwhile, cocoa futures in London fell to 4,283 thousand pounds sterling (about 5,685 thousand U.S. dollars) per metric ton and in New York to 5,764 thousand U.S. dollars per metric ton. A decline in refined beet sugar production in Germany is also forecast for the 2026/27 season, down to 3.33 million metric tons.
