Elderly Rabbit Info

Hi all!! I was gifted a rabbit and was very uneducated but have taken the years to educate myself and give proper care. My new anxiety is caring for an elderly little man! He’s an 8yr old indoor guy, I’m not sure the breed (lionhair Rex mix is what I was told? He’s about 3-5lbs). I’ve been surprised with his aging process as he’s only slowed down very very minimally (shorter spurts of binkys before taking a second break and continuing lol). I’m actually in school to be an LVT and work in a small animal practice so part of me expected him to go grey and slow down more like a dog or a cat- but nope!

Is there any advice y’all can give? I have him on unlimited hay/water and an oxbow elderly rabbit pellet mix. I did have him neutered because I did read about testicular cancers as they age. Are there good supplements for old rabbits? Can they really live to 14? What’s your experience with old buns?

We’ve had several buns live past 10 – it sounds like you’re doing all the right things in terms of food and medical care. Small amounts of fresh herbs can be a great treat for rabbits and they have lots of health benefits(fennel – good for digestion, mint – antiinflammatory, so good for sore joints, oregano – immune system support). Keep an eye on their eyes – cataracts are relatively common in older rabbits. There not much that can be done about them and rabbits adapt very well to limited vision, but it can be good to try and reduce barriers they might bump into if they’re losing their vision (our 8yo lil guy has cataracts in both eyes now, bless him. Living his best life though!) 🙂
