Bunny

Does anyone know what is happening to my BunBun?

❗️ NOTE: She is currently hospitalized and being treated at the vet clinic.

Yesterday my sweet little girl Bunny (we call her BunBun) suddenly started acting strange. She was moving as if her back legs were heavy. I began watching her closely, and about 5 min later she tried to jump onto the couch like she normally does, but she couldn’t make it. She fell back down and stayed there for about 10 seconds before managing to get up again.

At that point I knew something was wrong, so I took her to the vet immediately. They examined her and did X-rays, but nothing showed up. She stayed overnight at the clinic, and today they ran more tests.

Right now, she is unable to push herself up if she’s down on her belly unless someone helps her into an upright position (she does not even try). Once she’s sitting up, she eats normally and has a good appetite (she’s eating hay happily).

They ran a full blood panel. The only abnormalities were mild anemia and slightly elevated triglycerides. Her C-reactive protein was normal.

I’m very scared because the vets still don’t know what’s causing this. They mentioned a possible fracture (maybe from a jump), but the X-rays look normal. They also considered intoxication, but she’s eating normally and when we’re not home she stays in a safe enclosed area where no new foods or objects have been introduced recently. Another possibility they mentioned was encephalitis, but her C-reactive protein is normal.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their rabbit? What was the cause?

The vet has started her on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication, which is good, but I'm scared because they trying everything because they have no idea what is going on….

For a bit of background: BunBun was found when she was only 3 days old. Her mother was killed by a dog, and she was hand-raised by humans (not by me). She was fed goat’s milk, and because of that it was difficult to transition her to solid food at first — she had diarrhea for a while — but now her digestion is fine.

She’s about 7 months old, although she looks younger because she’s very small. She was vaccinated about two months ago. She is not spayed yet because we wanted to wait a little longer given her delicate health history.

I’m attaching a photo to send her some love and good wishes ❤️
