These are my rabbits, Lola, 5 yr old spayed female lion head previously bonded (not under my care) with a male who passed before I received her a year ago. She has had a litter a few years back I’m not sure on the details but she has been a mother. She does good with our two cats but we’ve been wanting to get a 2nd rabbit for some time.
Lola free roams in our upstairs apartment, no place is really off limits to her and everything is bunny proofed. Except for siblings rooms ofc she’s allowed in there but she hasn’t left the living room and our bedroom for 5 months, she’s very content where she is.
Rabbit #2 is Saturn, our new 4 month old holland lop. She is kept in my sisters room in a play pen with her own set of food bowls, litter box, toys etc. Today is day two of having our baby with us and she is absolutely wonderful and so loving. In Saturns play pen, Lola can go from laying with her while receiving pets and flopping in joy around Saturn, to randomly trying to hump Saturn but stopping and relaxing after being pushed off. I knew this was probably going to happen but was proud of how quickly she would “knock it off” and only really had to push her off 3 times within the 2 hour interaction in Saturns pen. This behavior has been the consistent with interactions between the both of them both today and yesterday in Saturns pen.
Yet today when I tried to introduce Saturn to the living room of our apartment, which houses Lola’s litter box, toys, bedding etc. I quickly had to separate them because Lola immediately aggressively attacked her. Saturn was quickly shaken up and I calmed her down before locking Lola’s pen (her pen houses her litter box and water I NEVER have it closed it just has water proof flooring helpful for protecting our wood) and attempting to have them interact in the living room through the gate yet this proved to be nearly impossible due to Lola aggressively clawing and nipping at the cage.
They are fully separated I’m nervous to try introducing them again yet I’ve given them each blankets and will exchange them tmr morning so they can get some scent exchange.
Any tips?
