Unfortunately my rabbit of over 10 years passed away today. Scully was a 10/almost 11 year old Netherland Dwarf. I’ve noticed she’s been losing weight despite having a very healthy appetite (grains, timothy hay and alfalfa hay, and the occasional banana, or carrot top) she went to the vet about 6 months ago and weighed 1.7lbs but she might have gotten smaller. Over the last 2 or 3 weeks I’ve noticed she’s been pooping everywhere and within the last week the poop turned soft. The last couple days I’ve noticed she been struggling more with her balance, if she fell over she struggled to get herself back up. I was planning on taking her to the emergency vet today when this morning I noticed she couldn’t stand up. I tried to stand her up and she was so weak and limp she would couldn’t support herself up. She would try to walk and would fall over. She wouldn’t to eat or drink, her eyes could barely stay open. But she occasionally tried to get up but just couldn’t. I rushed her to the emergency pet hospital. They asked what I wanted to do, if they should perform test and start inserting IV but given her age I opted for euthanasia. they placed a catheter in her and left us alone for a few minutes but before they returned to administer the euthanasia she had already passed while in my arms.
I don’t know if I did the right thing or not, if I should have let them give her IV and whatever other treatment. I don’t know if that would have saved her or if she would have died regardless and at least my way she died in my arms.
I know she was as old and all animals eventually die but i can’t help but feel guilty for not taking her to the vet sooner.
Additionally, I have another rabbit, he is a year and a half old so much younger than Scully but they bonded almost immediately when I got him (I didn’t know he was a male at first) they’ve been together since he was about 2 months old. I know rabbits are social animals and he’s used to having a companion so I don’t know how this will affect him.
