Why does he prefer a pile of cushions instead of the available space on the couch?

So, I've been bringing this boy out on couch dates. I make space for him at the other end of the couch, but he likes to get into the pile of cushions I move to make that space at the other end available to him. Do buns have a particular preference for messy areas? Advice on bun behavior very appreciated.
