We just adopted a double mane lionhead rabbit! She is 5 years next week and litter box trained. She peed a couple of times outside of her box on the first day (totally expected) but since then she’s gone in the box. That’s not the case with her poos. She does go some in her litter box but a ton outside of it. My daughter had been sweeping up her xpen 3 times a day since we got her 4 1/2 days ago. I expected some in the beginning to mark her territory (she’s spayed) and a few everyday but not this much on a continuing basis. She cleans her litter box regularly, but I think it’s just too small. It came with her and it’s a corner littler box.
I’m struggling to find a new litter box for her. I’ve done a lot of research, including reading most of the past posts on this site, and I think I’ve narrowed it down to 3 options. Money is not a factor. It is extremely important to me to have a litter box that is easy to maintain and is the best for our new bun. I think that that’s worth investing a lot of money in (even if we don’t have a lot of it).
Option 1: ROOLY Stainless Steel Litter Box. We would use the pine pellets from tractor supply. The grate holes are big enough for poo and pee to pass through (at least I think that’s how it works) we would have a little hay on the bottom and most in a hay feeder hanging above it. I like that it’s only 2 pieces so it’s less stuff to take apart and clean.
Option 2: Purina Tidy Cats Litter Box System, BREEZE. As shown on TheBunniesBrigate YouTube video. We would just have the pee pad in the drawer with some hay above the grate and then use a hanging hay feeder. We wouldn’t use pellet bedding at all. Maybe it would be less smelly because the poo and pee are separate 🤷♀️. But this would require more poop/ hay scoops, possibly daily but we wouldn’t need to scoop litter and the pads don’t need to be changed as often. We don’t need the big one so it might be harder to mount a hay feeder with the standard size.
Option 3: Hop litter box. I like that this is all in 1, so I don’t need to purchase a separate hay feeder. I would get the grate with it and use the pellet bedding. I don’t think I’d get the liners from them. It would basically be the same type of system as the rooly, but with more parts and a smaller footprint. I prefer a smaller one since we only have the 1 bun and it takes up less of her running/play-space. Would I need to take the whole top and side part off along with the grate to scoop out litter as needed? This would be the most expensive option and it’s currently out of stock which is not ideal since we could use it right away. But we can get by with what she has now with more daily work.
I really like the idea of a grate since she does have long fur. So all of these options have grates. But I could remove the grates on the Rooly and Hop if she absolutely hates it. I guess I could also block the grate on the Breeze one and use pellet bedding in the main box. Of course we would use the safe stuff and not the kind that comes with it in that case. I also think she’d be more likely to use it since it will stay clean longer.
