Example of gastrocolic reflex in a rabbit

From Wikipedia: “The gastrocolic reflex is a normal bodily response where eating food triggers contractions in the colon (large intestine) to make room for the new intake….”

In bun world, it means they poop when they eat. I put the pellet bowl and the hay in the litter box. This photo perfectly demonstrates how Pippin poops where he eats. Ever since I put the bowl in the litterbox, I don’t have to sweep up ‘Cocoa Puffs’ daily.

Disclaimer: I tried to post this on r/rabbits but the post was removed – I’m assuming due to their anti cage policy. I converted a ferret cage into a four level bun-safe ‘rabbitat’. Pippin loves being up high. He has a whole 2×4 level at human eye level and a ‘penthouse’ where he looks down on us all. The water bowl is on the first level. He has access to a 6×12 ft space all day and access to the kitchen, porch and living-room when supervised.
