Thailand’s critical-minerals story is becoming more industrial than geological. The country has documented rare-earth mineralization, a JORC lithium resource, legacy tin tailings containing monazite and xenotime, and government-mapped prospective ground. Yet Rare Earth Exchanges® found no clearly identified commercial primary rare-earth mine operating today. What Thailand does have is increasingly important: rare-earth metal conversion, NdFeB magnetic-powder production, magnet assembly, and a growing pipeline of rare-earth processing and permanent-magnet capacity.

One number deserves scrutiny. Thailand’s Department of Primary Industries and Mines (opens in a new tab) (DPIM) reports 8,212.7 tonnes of monazite exports worth ฿1.05 billion in 2025, while recording only 500 tonnes of monazite imports. DPIM’s production statistics meanwhile list no monazite production. The exports are real; their provenance is not obvious from the public statistics.
REEx Insight: The Factory May Arrive Before the Mine
Thailand may become something more strategically useful than another speculative exploration jurisdiction: a Southeast Asian conversion and manufacturing platform connecting non-Chinese mineral feedstock with the region’s enormous automotive, electronics, and industrial base.
Neo Performance Materials (opens in a new tab) already manufactures Magnequench NdFeB magnetic powders in Korat. Neo says its Thai operation sources material from Estonia’s NPM Silmet and third parties outside China, with neodymium oxide converted into metal through GQD Special Material’s Rayong facility (opens in a new tab), a Thai joint venture in which Neo owns 20%.
Arnold Magnetic Technologies began operating (opens in a new tab) its Chonburi facility in October 2024. It is now adding samarium-cobalt magnet production, shaping and finishing, with full operational readiness targeted for mid-2027.
Hastings Technology Metals adds another layer. Its proposed 49% investment in the Kabin Buri hydrometallurgical plant would place Hastings directly in Thailand’s rare-earth midstream. The company now targets approximately 12,000 tonnes per year of mixed rare-earth chloride and Q1 2027 production, although these remain development targets subject to transaction documentation, construction, and approvals. Initial feedstock is expected to include African monazite concentrate—not Thai ore.
That distinction is fundamental: Thailand does not need a Mountain Pass-sized mine to become important to rare earths.
Thailand Has Geology—But Potential Is Not a Reserve
Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources identifies seven prospective heavy-mineral and rare-earth areas covering 181 km², particularly around historic tin districts. Monazite, xenotime, columbite-tantalite, zircon, and other heavy minerals commonly occur as tin-mining by-products. Rayong and Prachuap Khiri Khan are specifically highlighted.
Scientific work is beginning to make the geology more interesting. A 2026 International Geology Review study found weathered granites at Lam Pi and Khao Phanom in southern Thailand consistent with ion-adsorption REE mineralization. Lam Pi contained highly extractable REEs comparable in extraction characteristics to economically important ion-adsorption systems elsewhere. But the accessible study does not establish a compliant economic resource.
At the abandoned Jarin tin mine in Kanchanaburi, researchers documented roughly 17 million tonnes of historic tailings containing monazite, xenotime, cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, and other heavy minerals. But 17 Mt is the tailings mass—not a 17-Mt rare-earth resource—and the paper did not establish economic REE grades. So plenty of open questions remain, needing more intelligence on the ground.
Lithium is more advanced. Reung Kiet in Phang Nga contains a JORC resource of 14.8 Mt grading 0.45% Li₂O, equivalent to about 164,500 tonnes LCE. Flagship Minerals agreed in 2026 to sell the project to a Thai syndicate led by Pendulum Auto for US$4 million.
The 8,213-Tonne Question
The monazite trade data may ultimately prove more revealing than any exploration headline.
USGS says Thailand “presumably mined monazite” in 2024, while DPIM records the striking 2025 export surge. Yet public statistics reviewed by REEx do not identify the mine, processor, stockpile, or original feedstock responsible. Possible explanations include contemporary by-product recovery, historic stockpiles, or reprocessing—but none should be asserted without evidence. For investors, this is precisely the dataset worth watching.
Washington Arrives—But Thailand Keeps Its Options Open
The October 2025 U.S.–Thailand critical-minerals MOU covers exploration, extraction, processing, recycling, technology transfer, and investment. It even contemplates price floors or similar market-support mechanisms. But Bangkok emphasized that the agreement is non-binding, conveys no automatic foreign mining rights, and remains subject to Thai law, environmental assessment, and public consultation. That reinforces earlier REEx analysis: Thailand is courting Washington without necessarily choosing Washington over Beijing.
Thailand’s strongest near-term critical-minerals asset may therefore not be what lies underground.
It may be what the country can manufacture after somebody else digs it up.

REEx takeaway: Thailand currently looks more credible as an emerging ex-China rare-earth midstream and magnet-manufacturing node than as a proven major rare-earth mining jurisdiction. The geological optionality is real. The factories are considerably closer to reality.
